A Detailed Look at What to Expect during Follicular Unit Extraction

Dr. Joseph Galitzin oversees all aspects of follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation, including preparation and recovery. During your initial consultation, the doctor and his team will review your medical history, assess the extent and cause of your hair loss, and discuss your desired outcomes. Skin Care at 5th Ave. in Peachtree City, GA, has helped many patients restore their hairlines and achieve thicker, fuller hair in just one treatment. We use the ARTAS® Robotic System, an advanced and sophisticated technology, for the most natural-looking results possible. The procedure can last several hours, but our team can answer all your questions and ensure you know exactly what to expect during treatment.

Preparing for FUE

In general, FUE is an appropriate treatment option if:

  • You are unhappy with the thickness of your hair
  • You are concerned with a receding hairline
  • You want to be able to wear your hair short
  • You are not a good candidate for strip harvesting

If you are a smoker, it is recommended that you quit prior to your procedure. Nicotine restricts the flow of oxygen to your blood and can result in poor wound healing. You should also refrain from drinking for the time period recommended by your doctor, as alcohol can cause swelling, inflammation, and excessive bleeding during treatment. Certain medications, including anticoagulants, can also interfere with the procedure, and you should provide Dr. Galitzin with a full list of medications during your consultation.

On average, our team harvests approximately 1,700 follicular units per session. This allows for extremely natural-looking results.

To plan and refine your treatment, Dr. Galitzin will use ARTAS Hair Studio®, a software program which generates 3-D before and after images of your procedure. Working together, you can adjust the number of grafts, distribution of hair follicles, and direction of hair to meet your expectations.

The FUE Procedure

Although the length of FUE treatment will depend on your individual plan, most procedures take between four and eight hours. We will typically schedule treatment to begin early in the morning and end in the afternoon. It is recommended that you wear comfortable clothing and bring a loose-fitting hat to wear home.

To ensure that you remain comfortable during the procedure, you will be seated and the treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic. Rather than use traditional manual extraction techniques, Dr. Galitzin uses ARTAS Artificial Intelligence™to carefully and precisely extract high-quality follicular units from the donor site. Although the number varies from patient to patient, on average, our team harvests 1,700 follicular units per session.

ARTAS is equipped with a high-definition stereoscopic vision system, which allows for incredible accuracy and minimal impact on the surrounding tissue. This extraction method is minimally invasive and does not require strip surgery, which maintains the natural appearance of the donor area.

We can use advanced digital imaging software to show the expected results of your procedure.

The ARTAS robotic system uses an advanced recipient site making system to convert your computer-generated treatment plan into strategically placed grafts. The system uses intelligent algorithms which determine exactly where the hair should be transplanted. This allows us to provide the most natural-looking outcomes and avoid disrupting healthy hair. During transplantation, Dr. Galitzin is able to control the hair:

  • Angle
  • Density
  • Distribution
  • Direction

These customizable parameters allow Dr. Galitzin to create more natural-looking results which uniquely complement your features. Throughout the entire procedure, our team will be on-hand to ensure that you are comfortable. However, most patients who have undergone FUE describe it as virtually pain-free.

Recovering from the Procedure

Most patients are able to go home immediately following the procedure. Dr. Galitzin will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your transplanted hair. Since FUE is minimally invasive, the recovery time is relatively short compared to other hair restoration methods. Most patients are able to sleep comfortably and return to work or normal activities within one to two days after their procedure. Your full results should become apparent after about six months.
